Star Stories
May 17 & 18
9:30 am–5 pm | Grand Hall

Exploring their ancestor’s traditional star knowledge, join youth from the Lakota Tribe as they create photomurals expressing their connection to the cosmos. Through still photos and video profiles featuring interviews with figures in their community, the students will explore specific Lakota Sioux ancestral cosmology with the guidance of visual artist and educator Robin Dahlberg and Sally Katz, Curatorial Assistant of Photography at SFMOMA. Plus, share your very own “star story” during an all-day live podcast recording.

Mapping Microbes: The Search for ET

Could microbes be the key to finding extraterrestrial life? With Mapping Microbes: The Search for ET, MAX gets microbial! Featuring three interactive stations throughout the day, this is an opportunity to engage with Academy scientists, including Chief of Science, Dr. Shannon Bennett, about the microbes all around (and inside) us and the possibility of “alien” microbes here on Earth! “Ask an Astrobiologist” with Dr. Sanjoy Som of the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, and chat with scientists, including NASA’s Meg Cheng Campbell.

Outta This World Poetry Slam

2–4 pm | Piazza

MAX 2019 partners with Youth Speaks to bring together a community of students at the nexus of space science and poetry. During this inspiring poetry slam, emerging youth poets will team up with scientist-mentors during this afternoon celebrating new voices in poetry and space science. Together, these young Bay Area poets will address themes of the New Space Age with sonic rhythmic constellations of their own. Judges for the Outta This World Poetry Slam include NASA’s Dr. Penny Boston and Dr. Sanjoy Som.

Star Stories: The Podcast
May 17
3:30–5 pm | Grand Hall

Participate in a live recording and explore an audio installation by youth sound engineers and artists from the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco as they capture Star Stories from Academy visitors. This podcast is produced in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of SF and Notes for Notes, and includes teaching artists TJ Guardino and Gerardo Escalante.
