In partnership with Seacology, the California Academy of Sciences invites you on an exclusive expedition to the island of Vanua Levu. For more than two decades, Seacology has worked with dozens of Fijian communities to protect vulnerable ecosystems, sustainably meet the needs of their people, and build resilience against increasingly severe tropical storms. Join us to see up-close how both the Academy and Seacology are making a difference in this beautiful country.

Your home base will be the Koro Sun Resort on the island of Vanua Levu. Situated on a 160-acre sanctuary, the resort is renowned for its lush rainforest setting, crystal-clear tropical waters, and gracious hospitality. Guests will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of room types at the time of booking.

Meet the experts: Terry Gosliner, PhD
Senior Curator of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology Dr. Terry Gosliner’s lifelong passion for nudibranchs and the natural world has taken him to the depths of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and into classrooms and government offices across the globe. He is a passionate advocate for increasing protections for biodiversity hotspots and raising awareness about ocean sustainability.

Meet the experts: Meg Burke, PhD
After 23 years at the Academy, Dr. Burke retired in July 2021 as associate dean of science operations. Now a research associate and emeritus associate dean, she has participated in Philippine coral reef expeditions since 2006, helping with the biodiversity research and conservation work, and leading the Academy’s educational outreach and community engagement efforts.

- We’ll be spending eight nights at the Koro Sun Resort, where you’ll have the option to choose from a variety of activities.
- The resort is located near some of Vanua Levu’s best dive sites, including the Namena Marine Reserve and Somosomo Straits.
- There is an in-house dive operator who serves divers and snorkelers of all skill levels and offers expert diving instruction for those new to diving.
- Enjoy complimentary group hikes through rainforest trails and roaring waterfalls, or cycle along the island’s mesmerizing coast.
- For an additional fee, rent paddleboards and kayaks, or set out on a guided excursion to the town of Savusavu.
- Visit the Nukubalavu village, longtime partners in Seacology’s conservation work, to learn more about this incredible partnership.
Itinerary
December 4: Transfer from airport to the Koro Sun Resort.
December 4-11: These days will be spent:
- Enjoying meals at the Koro Sun Resort’s three restaurants, masterfully prepared using locally sourced ingredients.
- Visiting the Nukubalavu village, who are longtime partners in Seacology’s conservation work.
- Diving and/or snorkeling with an in-house dive operator, who offers expert instruction for those new to diving. You’ll be mesmerized by the brilliant colors of soft corals and schools of tropical fish. Paddleboards and kayaks are also available to rent.
- Embarking on group hikes through rainforest trails to see roaring waterfalls.
- Listening to daily presentations by Seacology and California Academy of Sciences staff.
December 12: Depart Koro Sun, transfer back to airport.
