Discover everything Fiji has to offer, from picturesque coastlines to verdant rainforests. Experience its natural beauty and culture through diving, kayaking, snorkeling, and guided explorations, along with your hosts, Academy scientists Dr. Terry Gosliner and Dr. Meg Burke.

Your home base will be the Koro Sun Resort on the island of Vanua Levu. Situated on a 160-acre sanctuary, the resort is renowned for its lush rainforest setting, crystal-clear tropical waters, and gracious hospitality. Guests will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of room types at the time of booking.

Meet the experts: Terry Gosliner, PhD

Senior Curator of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology Dr. Terry Gosliner’s lifelong passion for nudibranchs and the natural world has taken him to the depths of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and into classrooms and government offices across the globe. He is a passionate advocate for increasing protections for biodiversity hotspots and raising awareness about ocean sustainability.

Meet the experts: Meg Burke, PhD

After 23 years at the Academy, Dr. Burke retired in July 2021 as associate dean of science operations. Now a research associate and emeritus associate dean, she has participated in Philippine coral reef expeditions since 2006, helping with the biodiversity research and conservation work, and leading the Academy’s educational outreach and community engagement efforts.

  • For an additional fee, rent paddleboards and kayaks, or set out on a guided excursion to the town of Savusavu.

Itinerary

December 4: Transfer from airport to the Koro Sun Resort.

December 4-11: These days will be spent:

  • Enjoying meals at the Koro Sun Resort’s three restaurants, masterfully prepared using locally sourced ingredients.
  • Visiting the Nukubalavu village, who are longtime partners in Seacology’s conservation work.
  • Diving and/or snorkeling with an in-house dive operator, who offers expert instruction for those new to diving. You’ll be mesmerized by the brilliant colors of soft corals and schools of tropical fish. Paddleboards and kayaks are also available to rent.
  • Embarking on group hikes through rainforest trails to see roaring waterfalls.
  • Listening to daily presentations by Seacology and California Academy of Sciences staff.

December 12: Depart Koro Sun, transfer back to airport.
