Dear Academy,
My babies love to stare at all the fish as they live their lives in the huge aquarium. My eldest (8) makes stories about particular fish and their friends and what they are doing that day. My youngest (under 1) just stares in amazement at the movement and the colors. Thank you for the space to be able to observe this wonderful life underwater.

Dear Academy,
It was the early 50's when a friend and I found that while we were not allowed to go to a movie on a school night, a trip to the new planetarium was educational and passed our parents muster. A short walk down to Monterey Blvd. and 10 cents got us on the number 10 bus for a short ride to the Academy. Those early astronomy shows and watching the Foucault pendulum remain in my mind as a cherished part of the great adventure of growing up in San Francisco.

Dear AOS
Places like the AOS bring families together and quality time making treasured moments and memories. Having a butterfly land on your hand and hearing the words "mom, quick take a picture!" are moments I live for! Having a place like this and being able to spend a day seeing nature and learning about all sorts of things while having fun.. is something we look to do often and then when my kids have kids they can do also!

Dear Friends of the Academy
In summers of yesteryear (1960 on), starting at the tender age of 9, I was old enough to ride my bike alone from the Outer Richmond through Golden Gate Park to the Academy. Life was simpler then, and admission was free!. The animals and exhibits stimulated my growing love of science. One thing led to another, and today I am in my 42nd year as a Professor of Neurobiology at the University of Southern California. On behalf of myself and the thousands of students I have taught and mentored over the years, my sincere thanks to the faculty and staff of the Academy of Sciences. I am just one of many who, directly and indirectly, have been positively influenced by your efforts. Keep up the good work!

Dear Academy,
On October 2, 2014 I went on a first date with a very sweet and handsome guy at the Academy. My mom and I were so impressed that he chose the Academy as our first date location and that he pre purchased our tickets. Bonus points. My wonderful dad loves aquariums, so I knew right away when my date was telling me all about the fish and sites I was seeing, that he and my dad would get along well. More points. In the arts and crafts skull exhibit his drawing of a skull was amazing, which reminded me of my brother and his love of drawing. Even more points. Then we had a blast dancing, which were the final points I needed to know he was someone special. We made our way up to the green living roof, gazed at the beautiful scenery and star lit sky. All of a sudden the biggest shooting star we’d ever seen whooshed across the sky. I turned to my date and said, “I think that’s a sign that we should kiss.” And kiss we did. The most magical first kiss I had ever had and we’ve been together ever since. Now we get to share the Academy and this wonderful story of ours to our two girls, which I’m sure they’ll get sick of hearing someday. :)

Dear California Academy of Sciences.
Celebrating Migratory Bird Day at the California Academy of Sciences with partners including Golden Gate Audubon, Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, SF Planning Department and US Fish and Wildlife was a wonderful event May 9, 2012. This event highlighted bird safe buildings, included informational talks, kids activities and bird walks on the CAS rooftop and in the surrounding urban park. This was one of so many CAS events welcoming and providing information to the community in a fun way.

The Steinhart Aquarium
We shared so many wonderful memories around the California Academy of Sciences. It's the one place we visit every year and one of my favorite memories is getting engaged in front of the aquarium! It is truly a special place in our hearts and a total surprise. Thank you!
Love always, Christina & Ken

Dearest Claude, our good luck charm!
You were there the night my now fiance and I met (first date, member's evening), and we got to know each other while gazing down into your tank waiting to see if you would move, telling each other stories about times we'd seen you swimming around or being fed. You were there the night we got engaged outside the Academy 3 years later - see photo attached, taken before I knew what was about to happen. You were swimming around that night so hard, now I know what you were all excited about. Thanks for your energy and your spirit. Hope you can come to the wedding. It's taking place in England next summer, so maybe start swimming? Thanks for being part of our story, we love you!

Dear Academy of Sciences
In 2014, my family including my 10 year old niece Kayla - who was visiting from London - ascended your steps. It was her first visit and as we approached the doors she excitedly exclaimed "Oh, this is going to be so much fun! We are going to do so much research!" Such enthusiasm and joy spawned by the promise of knowledge and mystery, it became our mantra for everything that day and long after. This past fall, Kayla started her first year at Girton College, Cambridge. She was accepted into an extremely competitive and prestigious Natural Sciences program. She is thriving and enjoying every minute with identical exuberance she exhibited years before. Your presence and that of so many other places of exploration like you, help shape and validate passions and support realities for living those passions. Thank you for giving our entire family a particularly special memory and for giving Kayla permission to nerd out unabashedly.

Dear Academy,
One of my many favorite memories from the Academy was watching a child run around on the circular bench surrounding the Whale Sculpture outside the front door of the Old Academy. He caught his foot on the small "curb" at the back of the bench and dove headlong into the pool. No injuries - maybe pride - and made quite a big splash! And I remember when I was a small child looking through the Sea Horse railing into the old grotto where the alligators lived.

Dear Volunteers,
My son loves talking to your volunteers. He and one of the volunteers once had a wonderful back-and-forth about raptors. They were both impressed by the other, which increased his interest in knowing as much as possible about all types of raptors. Thank you so much for taking the time to truly engage with kids, you have no idea the lasting impression it leaves.

Dear Academy of Science
My fondest memory of the Academy of Science was when I was young. Our school field trip was to visit the Academy of Science. Although, I enjoyed everything in the Academy of Science, I was most amazed in the Aquarium. All the different types of beautiful colored fishes. What amazed me the most was the octopus. I stood and watch it for many minutes. Hoping the Academy will bring joy to many other school children as it did me.

Dear Staff
We thoroughly enjoyed in 2011 the film about the Farallon Islands SANCTUARY IN THE SEA: A GULF OF THE FARALLONES EXPERIENCE. And, just seeing the life in your aquariums too was Spectacular! Thank you for your great work!
