NightLife LIVE announces lineup for 2015

SAN FRANCISCO (April 28, 2015) – NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences has just announced the lineup for its second annual NightLife LIVE music series, featuring headliners Machinedrum, Hanni El Khatib, The Dodos, Alvvays, Moon Duo, Hundred Waters, and more.

On one select Thursday each month, NightLife LIVE partners with top local promoters, including Noise Pop, Outside Lands, (((folkYEAH!))), Treasure Island Music Festival, Popscene SF, and DJ Dials, to pair emerging bands and musicians with cutting-edge visual artists in an innovative intersection of science, music, and art. NightLife LIVE events will take place on May 14, June 11, July 9, August 6, September 10, and October 15, 2015, in addition to the Academy’s regular NightLife events every Thursday. The only museum in the world to combine an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and living rainforest, live entertainment on an outdoor stage will transform the Academy into one of SF’s most unique music venues for each event.

In addition to live music, guests at each event can become a part of art with Barcelona’s Domestic Data Streamers, contributing real-time data to create interactive art installations that combine information science and eye-catching design. Guests can also discover the art of creative play with an interactive display from CODAME Art + Tech, a non-profit that aims to inspire through experience. Plus, each NightLife LIVE event will feature a curated schedule of interactive science side shows presented by local groups like Bay Area Science Festival, BioCurious, Counter Culture Labs, and UC Santa Cruz’s OpenLab, stage visuals by ALL OF IT NOW!, happy hour bites and cocktails, lawn games, and more—all while guests explore cutting-edge exhibits and marvel at 38,000 live animals.

May 14

Music by Machinedrum Vapor City Live and B. Bravo

Presented by DJ Dials

Catch a live performance by “electronic Renaissance man” Machinedrum, known for his rich exploration of multimedia arts and music, as he performs his latest and boldest release Vapor City from start to finish. Opening act B. Bravo will kick off the evening while schooling guests on the sonic pleasures of interstellar funk. A pioneer in the emerging Modern Funk Movement, Bravo's late-night synth sounds have shared the stage with the likes of Chromeo, Dam-Funk, and Flying Lotus, serenading crowds around the world with his unique brand of outer space boogie. Plus, catch a pre-show set by DJ Dials outside in the garden. In the Piazza, groove to the sounds of DJ Brogan Bentley.

June 11

Music by Hanni El Khatib and Hot Flash Heat Wave

Presented by Noise Pop

SF-born, LA-bred rocker Hanni El Khatib brings his gritty-yet-infectious brand of reverb-saturated indie rock to the NightLife LIVE stage this week. Fresh off the release of his latest album Moonlight (and with an acclaimed 2013 release Head In The Dirt produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys), this return to his Bay Area roots is sure to please. The night will open with SF’s own Hot Flash Heat Wave and a set filled with dance-inducing pop-rock melodies to get the crowd moving.

July 9

Music by The Dodos and Doe Eye

Presented by Popscene SF

Local heroes The Dodos return to the NightLife LIVE stage for an evening of insanely well-orchestrated indie rock. Fronted by Meric Long and Logan Kroeber, the critically acclaimed duo will play tracks that span their decade-long tenure in (and well beyond) the SF music scene, including their recent 2015 release Individ. Fronted by sultry singer/songwriter Maryam Qudos, opening act Doe Eye will warm up the crowd with moody melodies from their fresh new release Television, produced by John Vanderslice.

August 6

Music by Alvvays and GRMLN

Presented by Outside Lands Music Festival

This week, NightLife LIVE gets downright dreamy with the catchy lo-fi sounds of Alvvays. Hailing from Canada, the five-piece indie rock quintet will make their first Golden Gate Park appearance of the week, hitting notes from their self-titled debut. Santa Cruz-based GRMLN will open the night with punchy, surf-inspired energy that brings to mind warm and restless West Coast summers.

September 10

Music by Moon Duo and Peaking Lights Acid Test

Presented by (((folkYEAH!)))

Dreamy duo Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada grace the NightLife LIVE stage with cosmic chords from their 2015 release Shadow Of The Sun, which NPR calls “alluring and fresh.” Openers Peaking Lights Acid Test will kick off the night with psychedelic pop perfection.

October 15

Music by Hundred Waters and TOPS

Presented by Treasure Island Music Festival

For NightLife LIVE’s final event of the summer, dive deep with Hundred Waters, the band that SPIN defines as “electro-jazz-ambient-noise-dance-alt.” With abstract genre blending and bold vocals, they’ll bring the series to a close in style. Opening act TOPS from Montreal will warm up the crowd by, in their own words, “delivering a raw punk take on AM studio pop.”
