How to Detect Dark Matter: A Scientist's Story
Peter Sorensen, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
What does it mean to detect dark matter, and how do scientists actually do that? Dr. Sorensen has been working since 2002 on experiments designed to reveal the presence of this mysterious yet substantial part of the Universe - work that has taken him from beneath the Apennine Mountains of Central Italy to the Black Hills of South Dakota. For Dark Matter Day, he describes the task of directly detecting dark matter, how the detectors work, and what the scientists do.
No tickets are required for this talk, which is offered as part of "Dark Matter Day," recognized around the globe on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, as a day of inquiry into the true nature of dark matter.
