A better future is diverse by design. Bay Area high school students joined online design workshops and created posters to celebrate and spark diversity in science. See the winning posters in the Children’s Gallery.

Check out DxD Academy videos on type and layout with contest judge Anu Murthy, and on color and imagery with contest judge Bosco Hernández—both co-hosted by the Academy’s own Saba Tauqir.

Design is all around us, from the device you're reading this on to the tree you might be sitting under. Behind the scenes of the Academy are people who spend all day immersed in design, whether it's researching the structure of a spiderweb or creating graphic panels to captivate visitors. Creative Studio, the Academy’s in-house team of designers, believes that graphics are a powerful way to share ideas, influence others, and create beauty. We hope this contest inspires you to think of design not only as an exciting career path, but a way to change the world.

Because the design and science worlds do not adequately reflect our diverse communities, we especially encouraged submissions from anyone who self-identifies as BIPOC—although all students were welcome to participate.

Diversity x Design is a contest organized by the Creative Studio at California Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Inneract Project, and is generously supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

About the contest

Bay Area high school students living in or attending school in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma County were invited to create a poster that celebrates diversity in science, focused on one of five themes:

  1. The beauty of diversity
  2. My favorite Academy exhibit
  3. Including me in science
  4. Envisioning a bright future
  5. Science call-to-action
