My research focuses on the systematics and ecology of coral-reef fishes. Systematic studies deal mainly with three families: Batrachoididae (toadfishes), Gobiidae (gobies), and Holocentridae (soldierfishes). Ecological studies are centered on assemblage structure in various habitats and between oceans.
A SURVEY OF THE MARINE FISHES OF FIJI
An intensive study of the marine fishes of Fiji was conducted over a five-year period (1999 – 2003). The many specimens collected during this survey are now in the CAS Ichthyology collection and are being identified. A number of species new to science have already been described.
A REVIEW OF THE GOBIES IN THE GENUS EVIOTA.
Species of Eviota are very small, with most species maturing at lengths less than 15 mm SL. Because of their small size and cryptic habits, these fishes are seldom seen by divers, but are one of the most abundant fishes in rotenone collections. These small gobies may form an important component of the food of larger piscivorous fishes. There are many species in this genus yet to be described.
TOADFISH SYSTEMATICS
I have an ongoing interest in toadfish systematics, specializing in Old World genera. My colleague, Dr. Bruce Collette of the Smithsonian Institution, and I have revised the genera and now are investigating several species-level problems.
