Win a special day with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, April 25th, by greening your classroom!
The California Academy of Sciences, PG&E and the San Francisco Giants have teamed up to support schools that are trying to "green up" their act.
How do I participate?
Complete the following steps:
- Use the Green Classroom Audit lesson to score your classroom before and after making green changes.
- Perform a Green Classroom Audit using Score Sheet 1.
- Green your classroom over several days, weeks or a month. Use ideas from the lesson, but be creative!
- Perform a Green Classroom Audit using Score Sheet 2.
- Calculate the difference between your scores before and after greening your classroom. Did you improve your classroom audit score?
- Make a creative presentation that records and communicates how you greened your classroom.
- You can write an essay, make a movie, take photos, build a website, make a slideshow presentation, etc.
- Package your creative presentation so that it can be submitted electronically
- We can accept most common files types (e.g., .doc, .xls, .ppt, .pdf, .jpg, .html, .avi, .wav), but limit files to 5 MB in size.
Who is eligible?
- All K-8 classes in San Francisco County.
- Each submission must be from 1 individual class, with a maximum of 40 students per class submission.
- If you want to participate in the challenge with more than one class sharing the same room, submit separate applications for each. Although the classroom audit scores may be the same for the two, the creative presentations must differ.
What do I need to submit?
- Download and complete this cover sheet.
- Download and complete Score Sheet 1 and Score Sheet 2.
- Package your creative presentation for e-mail submission
Send all of your completed files as attachments (up to 5 MB) to teachers@calacademy.org.
All submissions must be electronic. Sending your project digitally is not only more sustainable, but we'll need to display it on the HD Scoreboard if you win!
If your class creates a large size file, such as a high-quality video, contact teachers@calacademy.org for submission instructions.
Submission Deadline: April 2, 2010, 5:00 pm
What are the prizes?
- Grand Prize: The winning class* will receive FREE tickets to attend the Earth Day San Francisco Giants game on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at AT&T Park! The class will have the opportunity to participate in a home plate ceremony to showcase their green classroom, and will be featured on the HD Scoreboard. The class will also meet an Academy scientist!
- Runner Up: The runner up will have their creative presentation featured on the HD Scoreboard at the Giants game on April 25, 2010.
