Campaign for the New Academy

Flash Not Detected
What has been astounding has been the overwhelming show of generosity, the outpouring of community affection for the Academy. This institution is for everyone. It cuts across every socioeconomic group in the City. And the campaign reflects this sense of personal connection.

When it was founded more than 150 years ago, the California Academy of Sciences set the standard for science museums everywhere. Now, with the generous support of people like you, the new Academy has an opportunity to revive an internationally recognized cultural icon and become the model for science museums well into the next century.

Bigger, Bolder, Better

The Campaign for the New Academy is the biggest cultural undertaking of its kind in San Francisco's history. With a target goal of $450 million, it has raised more than $429 million to date for the new building and endowment for research and education—an impressive 95% of its target. This is the only science museum nationwide to undergo such a renaissance.

Why a $488 Million Budget?

Because aquariums require complex, technical life-support systems, they are more costly to run than any other type of museum. Add to this cost the Academy's ambitious intent to lead by example and create a sustainable facility and work environment. State-of-the-art laboratories will support the work of renowned researchers, while ample collections space will provide room for growth of the more than 20 million specimens.

Looking Forward

The Academy's Executive Director Gregory C. Farrington has a vision for the future—to make the Academy nothing less than the finest science complex in the world. Instead of a repository of dried relics, he intends to create a forward-looking museum that “demonstrates where life is going. Preserving the record of evolution will still be important,” he says. But the main issues being addressed by the displays and research will be those affecting us daily—climate change, global warming, and survival of the species.
