75' Ferris Wheel Rolls in to Golden Gate Park for
The California Academy of Sciences
150th Anniversary Festival
Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7, 2003
(SAN FRANCISCO) April 28, 2003 - How does the oldest scientific institution
in the west celebrate its 150th Anniversary? With an outdoor street festival
in historic Golden Gate Park. On the same site as the 1894 Midwinter Exposition,
the 150-year-old Academy will roll in a 75' Ferris wheel to offer birds
eye views of Golden Gate Park Saturday, September 6, from 11 a.m. to 8
p.m. and Sunday, September 7, from
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Throughout the weekend, the California Academy of Sciences
will celebrate with scientific demonstrations, musical and children's
entertainment, street festival foods and free cake.
Two full days of live music taking place on two stages, nature inspired
arts and crafts, and a children's play area will be featured throughout
the weekend. Visitors may enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to
soar above Golden Gate Park in a gondola of the 75'foot Century Ferris
wheel both days of the festival. In addition to the traditional street
fair entertainment and dining, guests may view specimens from the Academy's
collections, interact with scientists from anthropology, aquatic biology,
botany, entomology, geology, herpetology, ichthyology, invertebrate zoology,
mammalogy, and ornithology. Also, visitors may join in on interactive
learning activities with Academy educators.
150 Years Ago
Before Cable Cars, Golden Gate Park, the Pony Express, or the Transcontinental
Rail Road was the California Academy of Sciences. Founded in 1853, the
Academy is celebrating its 150th Anniversary with a special exhibit, 150
Years: Exploring Nature's Wonders, lectures, programs and activities.

Event Details
The event in the park is free and open to the public. Admission to
the Academy will be free to visitors who ride bicycles or take public
transit. Visitors may ride to the festival using the Golden Gate Park
Free Shuttle. This service runs weekends and holidays May through October
2003 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information on shuttle stops is available

the museum will remain $8.50 for adults, $5.50 for youth ages 11to17,
$2.00 for children ages 4 to 11 and free for children ages 3 and under.

to the museum.
