Meg Lowman, PhD, a.k.a Canopy Meg

Choose to have your students interact on camera ($35) in conversation with Canopy Meg or choose to have your students interact via the teacher using a chat box ($10) to share questions and comments from the students. This program runs from 10:15 am - 11:15 am PST on February 14, 2017.

On February 14, 2017, Academy Scientist Dr. Meg Lowman will give us the scoop on how she got her many nicknames, including “Canopy Meg.”

What to expect on Februrary 14, 2017

Dr. Meg Lowman has many nicknames; she's been called the “real-life Lorax” by National Geographic and “Einstein of the treetops” by the Wall Street Journal, but she is best known as Canopy Meg.

In this 1-hour program, your 4th – 12th grade student(s) will chat with Canopy Meg to discover what it is like explore the little-known ecosystems that thrive high above the forest floor. During the program she will reveal her innovating designs for hot-air balloons and treetop walkways, which are now being used by scientists and students around the world.

This program is designed to be interactive in nature! Students will have the opportunity to ask Canopy Meg about their curiosities regarding her research in rainforest canopies, the tools she uses, and how she got her nickname.

Chat Box Option: $10/connection

Students get to see and hear the Academy expert, and enter comments and questions into a text-based chat window. To participate you must have the following technology available:

  • Desktop or laptop computer (NOT an iPad, tablet or Chromebook).
  • Strong internet connection; a wired connection is preferable.
  • An updated version of the free Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer.
  • If you have a large class we also recommend having a projector and speakers.
On-Camera Option: $35/connection

Students get to be on camera and talk directly with the expert to ask questions and share their ideas. To be an interactive on-camera participant you must:

  • Schedule a free technical check-in to make sure your connection is smooth on the day of the program.
  • Get signed media releases from each student who might be on camera.
  • Have at least 8 students in your group.

Additionally, you must have the following technology available:

  • Desktop or laptop computer (NOT an iPad, tablet or Chromebook)
  • Strong internet connection; a wired connection is preferable.
  • Webcam and microphone to use during the program.
  • An updated version of the free Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer.
  • If you have a large class we also recommend having a projector and speakers.

Can't connect with us on Tuesday, February 14th?
